So when men, particularly Black male artists, fly against the wind and do something out of the ordinary we take pause. We lament their confusing shortcomings (Kanye) and celebrate their high shots (Childish Gambino) for weeks, if not months and years (Outkast’s “Aquemini,” Miles Davis’ “Bitches Brew” & Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp A Butterfly”). But let a Black woman do some provocative, against the grain ish. Outside of Beyonce, American can’t seem to muster and hold the same type of intense, intellectual revelry. Folk talked about Janelle Monae’s crazy rad video for Pynk for about 9 hours before moving on to chat . Okay, there were maybe three “think pieces” or pynk pieces? But after a couple of weeks, everyone was back to talking about Kanye. But of course, no one really wants to introspect for 750 words about Black poontang. Talk about everything but the burden. Everyone wants to be in one, but no one wants to wax radical politics about one.

But for a lack of time, let me just offer a few thoughts about Solange and her jaw dropping, really smart homage to Black punany and Black women’s bodies in general. And yeah, I know officially Sol stated she was repping a lesser known Black Catholic saint named Saint Heron at the MET Gala, but c’mon, son. I know you saw that durag on her her head and the front of her dress, which screamed “labia, baby!” Y’all know Solange was repping Black women and our holy yoni, which gave birth to the world. Centering Black women’s bodies and Black pussy within an over the top themed celebration of (Eurocentric) “Heavenly Bodies …and the Catholic imagination,” was resistive and revolutionary af!! Three days later and I’m still here for it! Her dress turned the objectification, assault, marginalization, and criminalization of our Black vaginas on its clit, giving it, and us, a place amongst the sacred, holy, and divine! If you ain’t shouting amen, ase, or Wakanda Forever at this triumph you ain’t ever had a relationship with the sacred Black cootchie that Mtume dubbed “juicy fruit.” Thank you Solange for showing the muckety mucks of the world that God is a Black woman …with a durag no less! #METBall #pussypower #wcw #BlackGirlMagic
